Music in Tanzania

Tanzania is a big country with a population of slightly over 40 million. Tanzania has over 120 tribes each with its own unique brand of music and sometimes music instruments. So potentially one would expect to hear a wide variety of music coming from Tanzania just as it is in other parts of Africa. Unfortunately broadcasters both Radio and TV, in this country, have concentrated mostly on music recorded in Dar es Salaam by artists either based in the City or come to record in the City. This of course is unfortunate for music lovers who never get to hear hundreds of songs which never get airtime. 

Live dance bands traditional music bands, Taarab groups, traditional music groups are also still active all over the country again the local papers seem to concentrate on what are termed as new generation musicians who record mostly using studio generated music, and marginalizing live urban and especially traditional musician. The aim of this blog is to play a small part in bringing to limelight live musicians and hoping the public and media will get some insight on the activities in the music world
